A Visit to Harrogate

In June we took a weekend trip to Harrogate to see our friends Brad and Angela and their two cuties, Max and Reece. It was a very quick trip filled with ice cream, tent slumber parties, bike rides, and beautiful walks...what more can you ask for? Lyla and Max hit it off immediately and were best buds and Riley was a big helper with Reece. We even found time for some "rock climbing" at Brimham Rocks, a National Trust site with paths around giant, interesting rock formations. We also visited the Yorkshire Dales Ice Cream Farm, which I highly recommend to anyone in the area! They have a big outdoor playground and a fun American-style ice cream parlor/diner where we had lunch. But the best part of the ice cream farm is the barn they have that is filled with bales of hay to climb on, ropes to swing from and slides onto mattress lined floors covered with hay and filled with foam! Like a real life version of Wipeout! Harrogate was absolutely beautiful and it was so nice to relax with old friends! Brad and Angela have now headed back to Maryland and we can't wait to see them again when we move back next summer!

Pembrokeshire, Wales (Part II)

Pembrokeshire was so much fun that I couldn't fit it all in one blog post! Day #5 brought more sunshine and a trip to Bosherston to take a walk and check out the lily ponds.  Our walk led us to another beautiful beach, Broad Haven. We decided to set up camp and the kids spent a few hours playing in the water and exploring a cave. It was COLD but the kids swam anyway...you'll notice our children are the only ones in the pictures in the water without wet suits!

The girls are ready for our walk!

Bosherston was beautiful!

Most of them are looking. Success!

Lyla walked back and forth making footprints in the sand.

SAND!

I love this one of Neda and Elliott!

Some shenanigans were going on!

This is what the Brits in the water were wearing. No need for sunscreen!

After a wonderful day out, it was early to bed for the big day....Skomer Island! We had struck out a few times during the week since it was too windy for the ferry to run to the island. So we took no chances...only a few ferries are allowed to visit per day so our wonderful friend Ted ran to the ticket center at 6 am to make sure we got our tickets. Thanks Ted! The ferry ride was quick and easy and then we were in a place that surpassed all of our expectations...

Beautiful wildflowers were everywhere...
So we stopped for a family photo!

And another...

And another!

We checked out the beautiful cliffs...

Then it was time for PUFFINS!
What a view!

The puffins dig holes all over the island for their homes. There is a rope in certain spots to remind you to stay on the path so you don't accidentally step on a hole. We all took lots of pictures of this poor puffin, not realizing he was one of thousands we'd see, many much closer than this!
One puffin flew right by us!
Friends!

I think those two are kissing...
Family photo opp!

Such a beautiful place!
And then it was time for one more night of fun before our final morning in Wales. It was time to go home...but not before a few more group photos! What a fun week!

Pembrokeshire, Wales (Part 1)

For half-term break we rented a beautiful cottage in Pembrokeshire, Wales with two of our favorite families. We crossed our fingers and hoped for sunshine since we had heard the area had beautiful beaches and amazing coastal walks. We weren't disappointed! Somehow we lucked out and got amazing weather for almost the entire week, which is pretty much unheard of in Wales, which is even rainier than England. Woo hoo!

We arrived after lots of traffic and the kids were thrilled to explore their home away from home, claiming the yard's small summer house as their secret clubhouse for the week. We stayed in a converted old school house with an amazing backyard. I highly recommend The Old School, Marloes!

On our first full day in Wales, we decided to visit Marloes Sands, a beautiful nearby beach. We arrived at high tide and were disappointed to find a small rocky beach that could barely hold our 7 million beach toys, blankets, folding chairs and coolers. While we were busy carting our gear over the rock "pathway" onto the beach, the tide went out and the beach grew, exposing fun caves to explore and nice warm rock pools. If you're like I was and are unfamiliar with rockpools, they are little pools by the sea that fill with seawater at high tide and exist as separate pools during low tide. They are perfect for little kids because they are warmer than the sea and are generally shallow, although we found some pretty deep ones as well. I definitely recommend this beach for anyone visiting the area...they even recently filmed Snow White and the Huntsmen there...but warn you that the car park is VERY far from the actual beach so pack lightly (unlike us)!

Lyla and Ben loved the rock pools!

Neda and I bundled up on the beach...now I know why the Brits forego all of the crap  stuff we brought and bring windbreaks! FYI: this is a windbreak.

Lyla was like a little fish! She swam around in rock pools all day long!

Lyla and Elliott found a deep rock pool...after Elliott had already changed into his dry clothes. Oops!
Our second day was rainy so we spent the day playing at the house and exploring the area nearby. We took a nice walk in the rain and made some animal friends along the way!

Day #3 meant a beautiful drive to St. Davids and a boat trip around Ramsay Island.

Can you spot the seals? One is in the water and a bunch are sunbathing on a rock!

On the fourth day the kids visited Dale Beach with their dads.

Welcome to West Dale! Does she look properly waterproofed?

She wrote that all by herself. Nope.

Picture overload! You'll have to stay tuned for the next post to see Days 5 & 6, which included the highlight of the trip, our visit to see the puffins on Skomer Island!
